METROPOLITAN PLAYING FIELD
Located in Lower Sackville, the Metropolitan Playing Field is one of HRM’s existing athletics training facilities.
Sport: Athletics
Modifications: A new 400-metre outdoor track, with a grass infield and an additional throwing field were to be constructed.
Capital Investment: Approximately $1.4 million
Post-Games: The new track and throwing field would be utilized after the Games for high school track and field events, including regional and provincial championships, and for community soccer.
Distance from Commonwealth Park: 15 km or 20 minutes
GORSEBROOK FIELD
Gorsebrook Field is a public park and home to two ball fields, a sport field and soccer pitch.
Sport: Hockey
Modifications: A new hockey turf was to be installed for training.
Capital Investment: Approximately $4.0 million
Post-Games: This new field with International Federation field-of-play standard turf was to remain.
Distance from Commonwealth Park: 8.3 km or 11 minutes
CITADEL HIGH SCHOOL
Scheduled to open in September 2007, Citadel High School will replace Queen Elizabeth and Saint Patrick’s high schools, which have served Halifax peninsula students for over 50 years.
Sport: Netball
Capital Investment: Approximately $0.3 million
Modifications: Making the gymnasium sport-specific ready.
Distance from Commonwealth Park: 9.8 km or 15 minutes
THE COURTYARD
The Courtyard, located in Bayers Lake Business Park, is an indoor tennis facility.
Sport: Badminton
Capital Investment: Approximately $0.05 million
Modifications: Temporary sport-specific flooring was to be installed.
