Practice/Community Fields
Halifax 2014 identified the need for eight practice fields to host Rugby 7’s training. Halifax 2014 consulted with HRM staff to identify and recommend potential sites with existing community needs before selecting the locations.

Principles for recommended options:
  • Within a 30-minute drive from Commonwealth Park, enhancing clustering concept;
  • Ensuring legacy for HRM;
  • Preference for areas where no other new Halifax 2014 infrastructure was planned and where identified need exists; and,
  • Preference for sites adjacent to or near existing infrastructure (like schools and community centres) or other fields.
Halifax 2014 presented 22 options to HRM City Council on March 6, 2007. The 22 options demonstrated the potential reach and collective impact these eight fields would have on HRM.

The following Community Fields were presented:
  • Western Commons (across from Exhibition Park)
  • Mainland Common
  • Mount Saint Vincent University
  • Leiblin Drive and Old Sambro Road
  • Dartmouth Crossing
  • Eastern Passage Commons
  • Caledonia Road/Main Street
  • Highway 7 by Ross Road
  • Porter’s Lake
  • Bissett Road - Rehabilitation Centre Site
  • Upper Sackville
  • First Lake Drive, Lower Sackville
  • Highway 102/Duke Street Extension
  • Hammonds Plains Road/Highway 102
  • Kearney Lake Road and Blue Water
  • New High School, Tantallon
  • Tantallon Junior High
  • Peggy’s Cove Road
  • St. Margaret’s Centre
  • Pockwock
  • Church Street – Shubie Canal
  • Lockview School

Council feedback on the proposed field locations was to be provided by March 9, 2007.

Capital Investment: Approximately $3.4 million

Post Games: The fields selected would have become eight new outdoor, natural turf, multi-use fields for each community. The Games need for these fields presented an opportunity to create legacy infrastructure throughout the entire municipality.
